The Cedar Tree Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals; we do accept letters of inquiry for work that takes place within the United States.
The Cedar Tree Foundation makes grants in the following areas:
Environmental Education (in development)
We also have a directed grant process for board members; these small grants primarily fund work in MA, PA, and the greater DC Metro area.
We give particular consideration to proposals demonstrating strong elements of environmental justice and/or conservation within the program areas listed above.
How do I submit a letter of inquiry and is there a deadline?
There are no deadlines for letters of inquiry—LOIs are accepted on a rolling basis through the Foundation’s LOI email account (loi “at” cedartreefound “dot” org.) The Foundation does not accept submissions by mail. The best time to submit an LOI is September-April.
How long should my letter of inquiry be and what should I include?
Letters of inquiry should be no longer than three pages in length. In addition, please include an organizational budget, as well as a project budget if you are seeking project support.
If you are applying for a grant of $10,000 or less, please send an LOI that describes the problem you are addressing, your project plan, and your goals for the grant period.
For all other grants, your 3 page LOI should address these questions:
1) What problems are you solving?
2) How are you addressing these problems? What proof do you have that this is an effective solution?
3) What does success look like?
4) How much money do you need? And how does this amount fit into your revenue strategy?
5) How will you measure and report progress?
In lieu of answering these questions, you may attach your business plan.
Does the Cedar Tree Foundation make international grants?
No, we only fund organizations based in the US, for work in the US.
Can we apply if we are not a nonprofit organization?
No. We only fund organizations classified by the IRS as a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization that is not a private foundation. You may use a fiscal agent to act on the behalf of your organization, but they must meet the previously stated criteria.
Can I apply for an Organizational Capacity grant?
Yes, we make both general support and project support grants. We generally do not support endowments or capital requests.
Does the Cedar Tree Foundation make multi-year grants?
The Cedar Tree Foundation makes both single-year and multi-year grants.
What should I do if I submitted an LOI and I haven't heard back?
The Cedar Tree Foundation reviews LOIs four times a year (November, January, March, and June). You should hear from us within a month after your LOI was reviewed. If that time passes and you have not heard from us, please email or call.
